Hornstrandir Film Festival Hikes
Three Guided Expeditions
Discover the raw beauty of Iceland’s wilderness on an unforgettable hiking adventure to Hornstrandir, one of the most remote and breathtaking regions in the world. This untouched natural paradise offers dramatic landscapes, towering cliffs, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife, including Arctic foxes and seabirds.
In partnership with the Hornstrandir Film Festival (HFF), Utihreyfingin / Outsiders Iceland offers three unique hiking expeditions that combine exploration of this stunning wilderness with thought-provoking films screened in one of the world’s most remote locations. Held from July 18–25, the HFF features documentaries and feature films that challenge perspectives on nature, climate, and humanity—an experience made even more profound by the untamed surroundings of Hornstrandir.
Whether you’re an experienced hiker or seeking a more relaxed adventure, these guided expeditions, led by knowledgeable local experts, ensure an authentic and immersive experience. Choose from three tailored options, each offering a unique blend of adventure, culture, and breathtaking scenery.
All three expeditions require participants to carry their own camping gear, including tents, sleeping bags, food, and cooking equipment.
Option 1
The Short Adventure
July 18–20
A perfect introduction to Hornstrandir’s wilderness, this expedition blends hiking with the cultural experience of the film festival.
Itinerary
- July 18 Depart from Ísafjörður by boat to Sæból, Aðalvík. Set up camp, explore the beautiful area on foot, take a refreshing dip in the Atlantic ocean (optional!) and attend an HFF screening in the evening. Camp overnight in Aðalvík.
- July 19 Hike across Slétta to Hesteyri (15 km), explore its historical sites, and participate in an HFF screening in the evening. Camp overnight in Hesteyri.
- July 20 Short hike to Stekkeyri, followed by an afternoon boat return to Ísafjörður.
Option 2
The Longer Expedition
